Kelly Sheffield has never played a game of volleyball in his life. Truth be told, he got into the sport mostly as a favor to a former high school classmate who talked him into helping her coach the junior varsity team at Muncie Burris High School in Indiana.
Some three decades later Sheffield was at the top of his profession, having coached the University of Wisconsin volleyball team to its first ever NCAA national championship in 2021.
It was the culmination of a 21-year head coaching career that began at lowly Albany in 2001 and advanced to one of the top mid-majors in Dayton in 2008. In 2013 he was given the task of reviving a Wisconsin program that had not made the NCAA tournament field for six consecutive seasons. The Badgers played in the NCAA title game in his first season, beginning a run that saw them advance to at least the Sweet 16 for eight straight years, including three Final Four appearances. But they had never been able to win that last match, a mission that drew five super seniors to take advantage of an opportunity for an extra season of eligibility to make one last run at the coveted title. The Badgers overcame a couple significant injuries to win their third consecutive Big Ten Conference title and advance to the Final Four for the third straight year.
They would not be denied this time. Led by that veteran core of setter Sydney Hilley, middle blocker Dana Rettke, outside hitter Grace Loberg and libero Lauren Barnes plus a breakout performance by Most Outstanding Player, freshman Anna Smrek, the Badgers prevailed in two of the most dramatic Final Four matches in history including the national championship game win over Big Ten rival Nebraska.
